In the news: Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe
Lately, television and newspapers here have focused on a woman in prison, the British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who is being held in Iran.
Her plight has suddenly raised public awareness of the impact that the imprisoning of women has on their families (children, partners, parents) – notwithstanding the legality of their conviction. The public has also heard of Nazanin’s deteriorating mental health during incarceration and her struggle to get to see family members, especially her young daughter.
While Iran is far away, women here can suffer similarly but are totally out of the limelight of our news outlets. We at HUT make it our mission to look after those forgotten women. In the meantime, we sincerely hope that Nazanin can be reunited with her family without further delay.
